2014 Pacific Tattoo in Victoria, BC

Logo for Pacific Tattoo of Victoria, BCIf you are not familiar with Victoria, BC or the amazing events that go on around Vancouver Island, you may think from this title that we are talking about ink on your skin! Have no fear, even if you love tattoos of that kind, we are bringing to light western Canada’s musical extravaganza that is coming to Victoria the weekend of July 12-13, 2014.

The Pacific Tattoo is a truly fascinating demonstration of precision military drumming, piping and musical expertise. Where the “tattoo” came from is actually a very interesting story. When the British army was in fighting mode back in the 17th century, drummers were sent out each night at curfew to call soldiers back home from their outings at the local innkeeper’s bars. The drumming was called “doe den tap toe” which is Dutch for “turn off the tap.” Because it was a bit much to say, the name shortened to “tap-too” and is now called “tattoo.”

These kinds of military exhibitions take place all over the world and the Pacific Tattoo is the only military tattoo on the west coast of North America. Choirs, bands, dancers, massed pipes, drums, athletics and military skill demonstrations are all what make this event a one-of-a-kind experience you do not want to miss. This event brings history alive and brings special recognition to those who have served and continue to serve in the Canadian army.
