Cowichan Bay Spot Prawn Festival – Vancouver Island

The Cowichan Bay Spot Prawn Festival is a weekend full of food and fun the whole family will enjoy! This event will take place May 24-25, 2014 at several different locations around Cowichan Bay, a unique waterfront community on southern Vancouver Island. This historic community is known for its scenery and fishing—making it a spectacular venue for such an event.

In case you are not familiar, a prawn is a word that describes any large shrimp. You may hear “king prawn” or jumbo shrimp” used at grocery stores or restaurants. The fishing season for prawns is usually about eight weeks long and they are caught in small, netted traps or “pots” down on the ocean floor. A spot prawn will be larger than a regular shrimp and actually has spots on its tail.

This two-day festival celebrates and honors this local delicacy and there are so many activities going on, it may be hard to fit it all in! Here is just a sampling of what you will get to experience:

  • Food fair and all day music in the Big Tent front of the Maritime Center—local entertainers and great food will make this the place to be just to eat and relax.
  • Chefs demo tent, next to the Maritime Center, at which you can watch top local chefs create dishes with spot prawns as the main feature. Sessions will take place on the hour.
  • Family fun at the kid’s zone—face painting and coloring and more!
  • Wooden boat raffle

There will be prawns for sale down at the wharf, off the prawn boats and at Cowichan Bay Seafood. To avoid long line-ups though visitors are encouraged to pre-order or join in on the early-bird sales. It is also suggested that you bring a plastic pail or bucket with a handle and lid to safely transport your live prawns.
