After a delicious gourmet breakfast and coffee on their private deck or by the fire, our guests at The Prancing Horse often ask, “What should we do today?” While we could take hours describing all of our favorite things to do and see, we thought we would highlight a pretty spectacular place in Sidney, BC called the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre.
This “Aquarium of the Salish Sea” is a great place to visit if you enjoy marine life and love learning new things such as the fact that oysters can filter 190 litres of water a day or that Pacific geoduck clams can live up to 156 years. There is always something happening at this discovery centre and young and old will enjoy their time here.
On Mondays, the staff have special microscopes on display for you to take a closer look at some incredible specimens –your chance to see things from a whole different perspective. On Thursdays, there is a special session designated for seniors when an Oceaneer leads a tour and one-on-one interaction with extra ambient noise in the centre turned down so it is easier to hear. There are also cookies and tea offered at this time and additional seating options. Weekends are a busy time at the center and bring a host of fun activities for the whole family such as feature presentations, oceancast videos, arts, crafts, story times, games, and activities. Once a month, there is also a special evening lecture series from a variety of experts.
With your admission on any given day, you can take part in a free guided tour with an experienced Oceaneer. If you are looking for a little more of an “inside look” we suggest paying an extra $7 and taking their Behind the Scenes Tour which lasts an hour and offers a rare look at the water systems, animals, and methods of the center. If you have young ones travelling with you, they may enjoy one of the many classes and workshops that are offered.
At The Prancing Horse Retreat, we have hosted several groups over the years and if while you are with us you will be in need of a unique place to hold a meeting or cocktail party, there is a fantastic space at the Discovery Centre that can accommodate a small gathering or a group up to 200 people.
Coming up February 7-9, 2015, you can also attend the many activities that will be going on as part of the Sidney Family Day Weekend. This is a three-day LEGO brick festival that will include a scavenger hunt, the building of a 6ft Seaspan Tugboat out of LEGO, and LEGO creations being built underwater by Rockfish Divers at the Sidney Pier.
This great place is just one of the many spots to visit during your time on Vancouver Island. Are you feeling the need for a luxurious getaway where you can totally relax and unwind?
