One of the things that makes Vancouver Island so special is the cultural diversity represented in those who call this area home. There are hundreds of thousands of foreign-born residents–people come from Asia, Europe, South America, Central America, the Middle East, and Africa to name just a few. Vancouver is actually one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada with 52% speaking a first language other than English. This rich diversity is at the foundation of wonderful events such as the One World Festival, which will be taking place on October 18th, 2014.
All of these cultures bring their own unique cuisines, artwork, music, and heritages, which have shaped Vancouver and the Island into a vibrant international hotspot. The One World Festival has a mission to bridge gaps between cultures and provide opportunities for sharing and collaborating. The hope is that an event such as this will discourage racism, break down barriers, and promote acceptance and understanding. In addition to meeting new friends in your community, there will also be craft exhibitions, the chance to taste a variety of international cuisines, a wide range of cultural music and performances going on, fun children’s and multicultural activities, and informational booths to peruse.
