You may think that castles are only in old European cities and the fairytale stories you read to young ones but there is indeed a spectacular one right here on Vancouver Island. The Craigdarroch Castle is a stunning building on a gorgeous piece of property that overlooks the city of Victoria, BC.
Christmas at the Castle happens every December and it is truly a must-see during the holiday season. A host of staff and volunteers spend hours decorating the castle for the Christmas season and the result is simply breathtaking. No detail has been left out and a self-guided tour through this incredible place will be sure to get you into the holiday spirit and you may even get a few ideas for your own humble abode!
The Craigdarroch Castle was built between 1887 and 1890 for industrial giant and Scottish immigrant, Robert Dunsmuir. At that time he was the richest and most important man in Western Canada and he actually ended up passing away in 1889, before his beloved mansion was even finished. The entire Victorian estate, full of spectacular stained glass windows, incredible woodwork and one-of-a-kind furnishings was all left to his wife, who stayed there until 1908. Also called, “Canada’s Castle,” this amazing place is only a short walk from downtown Victoria and a quick 20-minute drive from The Prancing Horse Retreat.
